The Captain's Table or something...

At the time Lois Anne captured this shot, the building at the left was known as The Captain's Table.  For many years, this restaurant/bar served residents and visitors of Cedar Key.  Something happened.  The Captain's Table or at least the name disappeared.  Some time later it was reincarnated as The Rusty Rim and Coconuts (also a restaurant and bar).  Then it burned down.  On our last visit to Cedar Key it was being rebuilt.

We liked it best when it was still The Captain's Table; when, on several occasions, we sat out on that pier savoring frozen margaritas as the heat of the day met the cool, cool, cool of the evening.

Cedar Key a Biker Haven

Cedar Key is located 24 miles west of the last main north-south highway in central Florida. It's a nice ride. Nothing but a couple of little towns and a few small businesses until you arrive on the bridge that leads you onto the island that is Cedar Key. Motorcycle riders love it and you'll often find Cedar Key full of bikes, mostly Harley Davidson's.

Sunset by Lois

Please notice the pole. Hurricanes have hit Cedar Key at various times down through the years. The maximum sea level thus far has been 12 feet. Thus new homes in Cedar Key must be built on stilts so that the water can rush underneath the structure without washing it away.

The Black Dog Bar & Tables

The Black Dog, located on the Dock, is a bar featuring fine wines, beer and cigars! You're welcome to come in, have a drink and a smoke and enjoy the water view.

There is more information here.

An old pier in sepia

I took this shot about 3 years ago; and may have posted it then. But it's one of my favorites, so I'm posting it for what may be the 2nd time.

Biker heaven

For some reason, bikers are drawn to Cedar Key. At certain times of the year the place is awash in leather and steel and the deep-throated roar of Harley Hogs fills the air for miles.

The news team is on the way

Back some months ago, Cedar Key suffered the intrusion of salt water into its water supply. Because the city's water was not potable, the authorities had fresh water trucked in to be handed out to Cedar Key residents and tourists. Cedar Key is in Levy County. This is big news in Levy County. Thus the "local" TV station sent out troops in its news van to cover the story. And we were there to cover the news van!

Going, going ...

Cedar Key's iconic shack has been on its way out for a long time. Somehow, it manages to hang on. For how much longer is anyone's guess.

Ceramic tiled fish

On Main Street in Cedar Key there is an area which includes a store where artists hang out and work and sell their creations.  Part of this area is set aside as an artsy park where items created by local artists are displayed.  This is a fish, a piece of a larger project which includes a fisherman.  You can tell by the line coming out of the fish's mouth that it has been hooked.

You might call it a Redfish, but it doesn't look like any Redfish I've seen!

Island Tours

Unfortunately, Island Tours was closed on this particular day because of the high winds and high seas.

Fresh water for the people

Because of rising seas, saltwater had intruded into Cedar Key's water supply and made it unfit for drinking. Thus, the authorities arranged to have water trucked in to the island. In this scene, vehicles have lined up to receive their free water. I don't know how the matter was resolved.

Old phones hang around not up

As I recall, this was part of an art project - an old phone, in two pieces, set in a wood crevice in an old building on Main Street.  I'm not sure what the point was, but would guess it had something to do with communication - that maybe we should get off the phone and have more one-on-one conversations; that we should not let technology run our lives.

My friend, Danielle, visited Cedar Key recently and took a photo of this "project" also.  Please check it out on her blog, Unconventional Photography.  Her title is much more apt.

End of the pier

Someone once told me to take a long walk off a short pier. I didn't think that was very nice because after a few minutes, I found myself in deep water.

Private plane

This private plane was parked at the end of the airstrip at Cedar Key.  There is no actual airport.  But at certain times of the year, the airstrip is quite busy.  Some folks who live along the airstrip park their planes in their yards.

Captain Doug's Tours

This photo was taken last June. If I recall correctly, Lois Anne and I went on a sunset cruise with Captain Doug in 1989. It was beautiful.

Toe Dipping

This photo was taken last June.  However, while it can get chilly during the winter at Cedar Key (especially if the wind is blowing in off the water), it is quite often warm enough to do some toe dipping.
